Who’s letting the Mums out?

Posted by: madcow | Comments (0)

Well, we all saw what happened when the Mums were let out over last weekend (refer to video at the end of this post …) which I wrote about a few days ago.

For me, its’ about relaxation, rejuventaion and doing something about your mental health! Yes – yours!

We all know where I stand on parenting, and that a sane and happy mummy is, in my opinion, going to have a much greater impact on the outcome, stability and wellbeing of your kids than if you breastfeed for 2 years in between slitting your wrists and being unable to function adequately. Just saying.

It is for this reason that I started up Mums’ Night Out! some 7 years ago, and the reason I am continuing with somewhat less extravagent, dancey on table events, that I refer to as Mental Health Moments; because, getting away from your kids/house/job/husband/life is necessary. Having a laugh, a good chat and spending even a small amount of time with some people you like and have fun with has a profound impact on how you’re feeling.

Sure, some of us love a quiet bath and a read, and some of us like to listen to music, whether it be classical or hard rock or trash metal or jazz … and some of is – ie me – likes to laugh loudly (and I snort when I laugh, too), eat great food, have a glass of wine or 7. Mostly, I love to spend my time with people I love. And therein lies the concept behind the Mentla Health Moments moments. Created and organised for purely selfish reasons.

And I LOVE it!

Anyhoo, our next one is happening on Friday September 17th at 7.30pm at Prevale in Ascot Vale (Melbourne) and you can …

And the really awesome bit about this particular event is that it has inadvertantly become the extra-special, super-exclusive, unofficial launch for my book Diary of a Mad Cow: A Guide to Bad Mothering.

You have the opportunity to get your hands on one of the first copies of the book, a very super-special, extra exclusive edition and have it signed by me on the night. And you get to have dinner with me and share some bubble with me and have all kinds of fun.

Bit of a Double Whammy on the night … food, friends, fun, buy a super-exclusive, special edition book, signed by the author and do some amazingly wonderful things for your sanity and mental health.

Oh, wait, I can’t count. That’s WAY more than a Double Whammy – there’s a HEAP of awesome stuff in there.

Anyhoo, I can’t promise the night will be anything like the video below, but we’re gonna have a load of fun.

Yeah, yeah, probably incredibly impartial because, well, Mums’ Night Out! is my ‘baby’, conceived by me, stressed over by me and, yes, it to has sent me into the foetal position, sobbing my little heart out in the middle of the night, much like all my other babies have.

Or, you could view it that I know the damned event inside out, so can give you a more descript view of it. Or both :)

Anyhoo, it’s now, what, the 7th one of these I’ve done (I took a year off one year), the first being in 2003. I have to say, despite the fact the chick I communicated with at the venue being a rude bitch and not having the ability to crack a smile, this would have to have been the Best. One. Yet.

I do put some of this down to the people I had helping me … dragged in kicking and screaming, and probably feeling manipulated into it by my odd tantrum. But truly, Kirsty and Jacinta were (and still are) a godsend – especially given I was out of action for a week leading up to the event.

Mostly, I put it down to the awesome sponsors we had supporting the night, our fabulous DJ for the night, Arnie from Arnold’s Disco, and the gorouges Deb from Day 2 Day PA, who acted as the MC for the event … and bloody good acting she did, too. She really is just fabulous.

The Real Mum of the Year was announced, the illustrious title going to Jodi Gibson of Melbourne, who was tiara’d, robed and sashed, courtesy of Clever Streak, Pink Apple and Bella Sashes, and won some prizes from Chef’s Toolbox. Of course, she was also presented with a trophy, courtesy of Engraving Plus and a chocolte bouquet from Better than Flowers.

Prizes were aplenty; bling from Glitzee, adornments and accessories from Baubles, Bubbles & Bags and Accessory IDheas, gifts from Real Mums,  What Can I Eat, Mother’s Toolkit, Sunny Mummy, La Toriana, and … soooo many  more …

They had to work for them though; Jacinta managing to get her washing (well, socks specifically) sorted, paired and folded, the person matching the most pairs chose their prize. We also knew how to fill a dance floor – literally everyone up – for a game of musical statues to win the much coveted two night stay at Front Beach Torquay!

Guests were treated to a fashion parade by some very real mums, courtesy of Argyro Gavalas, who also dressed me for the evening (well, I dressed myself, I am capable of doing that – even after all the wine’s I’d had pre-event – they just provided the outfit). Oh, how everyone laughed and laughed and wolf-whilstled and drank some more.

We had some deliciously scrumptious cupcakes from Cupcakes of Kensington to indulge in, and had soooo much fun with the incredibly awesome Chocolate Shots courtesy of Chocolatier, who are doubly awesome because they came to our rescue with only two days notice after a previous sponsor had a crisis and has to pull out. So, we do love Chocolatier quite a lot right at this point in time.

There were also the gorgeous girls from Adorn Mineral Cosmetics who made us all look more gorgeous, and were run off their feet the entire night, providing mini-makoevers and touch ups (of the makeup on our face! It wasn’t that sort of night, thank you very much!), and the very fabulous Emma from Hand Print Massage who treated all of us (except me, I never got one *pout*) to a bit of a back rub, while the talented Sarah Louise wandered around pointing a camera in our faces and catching the action.

Everyone went home happy, tired and more than a wee bit pissed, with a goody bag from The Spotty Napkin, who also provided the lolly bags – yes, lolly bags! – filled with vouchers and samples from everyone above, and more; Your Kids Ed contributed, as did Suz’s Space, Ahava Dead Sea, Curves, 52 Hair Co, some much needed Wine Wipes and even more bling courtsey of Dot Info Enterprises (who, I also need to add, are our BIGGEST supporter, we wouldn’t have the night if not for them, and they also have the most amazing and the classiest woman in the world working for them!)

All in all, it was a fabulous night, with some great goodies to take home. The best bit, for me, was how everyone just relaxed and had FUN! A LOT of fun. No doubt the mental health break many needed.

It’s not just me, either, quite a few have commented that this was the “best Mums’ Night Out! yet” … so that’s nice!

Can’t wait for the next one. I just love catching up with a bunch of amazing, fun and supportive women, dancing, and doing a heap of laughing! Love it!

Here are some (very few, actually!) hightlights of the night :)

Hooray, hooray! My favourite event of the year!

Aside from my birthday of course, because I love birthdays. Actually, no, Mums’ Night Out! is way more FUN! Because there is dancing and cake and lots of wine and fun chicks and scrummy food … just like I want my birthday to be, but it never is.

*sigh*

Anyhoo, thanks to the awesome support of businesses like Dot Info Enterprises and Clever Streak  it is on again … Friday the 14th of May … you can check out all the details at www.mumsnightout.com.au!

I also believe there are some photos, thaks to Photos by Kelly, up from last year’s event on the Mums’ Night Out! page on Facebook if you are interested.

At first glance, it’s just a fabulous night out with drinking, food, dancing, entertainment, music, and a bunch of fun chicks.

What it turns out being, quite by accident, is the best mental health moment a mum can have.

Sure, you go home the next morning (well, a bunch of us go home the next morning … some make it home the evening of the night out) with sore feet, hungover and swearing we’re never gonna drink again. Some of us just go home swearing. And sore from dancing.

Just a night of absolute freedom, fun and just the best laughs ever, kinda does quite a lot for the stress levels, the hormoney things that are released when you laugh and dance (remember those two things).

I think just being allowed to be yourself, and someone bringing you a drink and something to eat when your bum hits a chair, rather than the other way around, may have something to do with it, too.

Anyhoo, I’ve booked my ticket.

Have you booked yours yet?

A quick update and some stuff coming up

Posted by: madcow | Comments (0)

Yipee!

We have lots of very exciting things planned for next year … some of which we’re working on now, like Mums’ Night Out! for example, and the Real Mum of the Year Award, which we do each and every year … and some other stuff that will really take off in 2010.

There’s also things like the publication of Mad Cow’s first book, Mad Cow’s Guide To Bad Mothering (interim title) (you can pre-order your copy NOW) and the commencment of the Bad Mother’s Club Guilt Free Parenting Program, and lots more events and In Real Life get togethers for Mums.

Anyhoo, the gist of all that is that we need to do some stuff with the current blog template (among other things – new realmums.com.au and Bad Mother’s Club websites coming up as well), so the blog will have a new look over the next week. Assuming the Universe and the Whims Of Technology align at the same time as I’m / we’re actually doing the stuff that causes these changes, so that we can keep you better informed and updated about all the really cool stuff going on and coming up :)

Stay tuned.

(And remember to grab your Mums’ Night Out! tickets at the pre-sale price, which expires midnight December 25th and pre-order your copy of Mad Cow’s Guide to Bad Mothering)

I have no real idea what the 12 Days of Christmas tradtion is, or where it originate. I’ve just known about the song all my life.

And heard talk of it. Although I do believe it kicks off on the 25th and runs till January 6th the following year, by which time you must have pulled down the Chrissy tree for fear of attracting bad luck.

Anyway, I’ve chosen to use these first 12 days of December to tell you about some really cool stuff we’ve come across (and possibly reviewed) during the year, remind you of some of the awesome people who have sponsored some of our events and share some ideas on some great Christmas presents … for you, the kids, the hubby, aunts, uncles, friends and various others …

Just a suggestion: feel free to forward the link of the stuff you like to someone else and say “BUY THIS FOR ME!” :)

The First Day – we’re offering something for Mums … we’re doing a pre-Christmas pre-sale of Mums’ Night Out! tickets for May 14th next year.

The pre-sale tickets are a once off, and this price will not be repeated.

(With the possible exception of those who become Bad Mother’s Club Members – details to come)

The pre-sale will conclude at midnight on the 25th of December – this is for those of you who get crap presents and would like to supplement then with something really, really awesome!

Tickets will be $69 per person. The pre-sale price, ending December 25th at midnight are $59 per person.

Buy Yours Now (or send the link to someone who has no idea, telling them where to get your awesome present) … http://mumsnightout.eventbee.com

End of Year Work Parties

Posted by: madcow | Comments (0)

Christmas-Real-MumThe thing that reguarly comes up, throughout the year, with Work At Home Mums (WAHMs), self-employed micro business owners and the like, is the loneliness (probably also why social media networks are great for proctastination)

Lots of Mums say the same thing, whether they’re running their own business, a stay at home mum, or working full- or part-time, or casually, or volunteering or whatever. Lots of Mums don’t, too, and that’s ok, but lots do.

There’s not much I like more than a party. I’ve been known to have tantrums, as I was growing up, when my birthday was coming and no party was organised. Like when I turned 30 and the suggestion was “lets go out for dinner with a few people”.

Pffft!

So I organised my own one then. And I’m organising my own End Of Year Party for Mums. Because I can. And I like parties. And wine. And food. Mostly, I like parties with wine and food.

Given I’m organising it, you know it will have wine and food … and would you look at that! It does!

The Real Mums and Bad Mother’s Chrismtas Lunch … Saturday the 5th of December at 2pm … at the usual – Prevale 236 Union Road Ascot Vale (great food and wine! And coffee)

Bookings are essential … because everyone goes home with a lovely gift. You don’t want to miss out on that, do you?

Book your tix now at http://realmumschristmas09.eventbee.com

Easy peasy and we’ll see you there! Hurrah!

Real Mums Recommended – Prevale

Posted by: madcow | Comments (1)

I don’t usually like to do reviews of products, services or businesses that are restricted to an particular geographical location, as I know my readers are all over the place like a mad woman’s breakfast, but I just had to do this one.

Particularly after attending a nearly $50 per head function at another venue, which served up instant coffee, to which a friend and I walked out and went somewhere we could trust!

Prevale cafe | bar | restaurant is, admittedly, a local restaurant for me. It is one I frequent whenever I can, not least because it’s literally “just around the corner” at 236 Union Road, Ascot Vale (that’s just out of Melbourne, Vic)

Where do I start … the most important bit, the food is fabulous! There is such a wide range to choose from, from pasta and pizza, to steaks and seafood and game, and the desserts are do die for. The “selection of dips” is the highlight of the menu; a range of out of the ordinary, but not ostentatious or weird dips presented with a ‘volcano’ of mountain bread. The presentation is stunning, the taste devine.

They also offer some really great wines with their menu. Even the house wine is nice – not just drinkable, but scrumptious!

Another aspect I truly love is the child-friendliness of the place. Sure, they’re nice to the kids, they have colouring competions where the kids can win some really great stuff, but they also treat the kids pallets with respect. The Hawaii’an pizza isn’t a heated up frozen variety like everywhere else in the area, but a freshly made full sized pizza. And when I say “freshly made” I mean they roll the dough in front of the kids and whack the topping on there and then. No chicken nuggets or fish fingers, but crumbed fresh chicken breast and decent sized pieces of fish. And, no, they’re not expensive – exactly the same as the frozen pizza’d, chicken nuggets and fish fingers place up the road … $7

We’ve been there for nice, quiet, romantic dinners sans kids and it’s just as good.

They’re also great for a girl’s night out, mother’s group coffees and functions of any sort.

I know this is a “love it love it love it” review … but I sincerely do.

Even eight year old Monkey Boy did a review on it … and, although he sometimes eats his own snot, he is a bit of a food snob himself and loves the place. Six year old Godzilla regularly requests a meal there, and even Chippie had his first restaurant meal at Prevale – a bowl of freshly mashed apple at the age of 7 months.

If you’re ever out this way, drop into Prevale for a meal; lunch or dinner and breakfast on Saturday & Sunday.

Prevale – 236 Union Road Ascot Vale 3032

Definitely Real Mums Recommended on sooo many levels …. 5 crayons for kid friendly, 5 martinis for a girls night out, 5 lattes for a quick coffee and 5 stars for all round food and service!

How cool is this?

OK, I’m not on the school parent committee dictatorship (my hair isn’t easy to manage enough, and I can’t stand the “we didn’t do that last year” crap) but if I was, I’d grab these chicks.

I have used them for fundraising efforts before (Mums’ Night Out! 2007 and 2009)  just not in this format – and I think it is soooo cool! Wendy Little and Carolyn Chillura team up in Crummy Mummies – to put the “fun” back in “fundraising” …

Their flyer says:

Make your next fundraising event a night to remember with two of Melbourne’s favourite stand-up comedi-mums, Wendy Little and Carolyn Chillura. Providing a hilarious insight into parenthood and the journey getting there and beyond – Crummy Mummies are sure to provide a fun factor at your next trivia night or wine and cheese night or they can organise an entire comedy night for you.

Contact:

Crummy Mummies – enquiries@crummymummies.com.au

Visit their website – www.crummymummies.com.au

Unlike a chocolate drive (yes, yet another bloody one) I can vouch that these two are fantastic for your abs! They come fat-free and give you a work out.

I just can’t promise they’re any good for your pelvic floor. Except to let you know whether its working well or not.

Now … what event can I organise next …

Real Mum of the Year Finalist – Kim

Posted by: madcow | Comments (0)
Real Mum of the Year Award Finalist 2009

Real Mum of the Year Award Finalist 2009

Kim is a married mother to one son, aged 6, and is currently up the duff and living in the ACT.

Kim is a fan of duct tape, and of letting children figure it out for themselves. Usually a “Fine! Do it yourself then!!” kind of encouragement when she gets over her kid telling her he can “do it himself”, then whinging coz he won’t. Bloody kids.

Depsite knowing the mess she’s gonna come home to, she has seriously contemplated buggering off for a weekend away with the girls for a wine and a whine – and just letting her two “boys” fight it out, fend for themselves and sort their crap out before she gets home.

Kim is also a victim of the Wii and Children Combo – where when playing a sonic game, her darling son was bouncing around beside her, in charachter. Getting in her way, Kim pushed him aside (and flat on his bum), causing tears.

Like any good mother, she continued playing until she’d won, then checked that no blood was present.

Congrats and good luck, Kim!
